How sailing helps foster youth build confidence, life skills, and new possibilities
At Angels Nest, we are always grateful for the partners who help create meaningful experiences for the youth we serve. One of those special partners is Matt Schulz, Founder of LifeSail, a program that has made a lasting impact on so many young people through the art of sailing.
We were proud to see Matt recently featured in a CBS Sports Hero segment highlighting the incredible work he has done to impact thousands of lives through LifeSail. His passion for sailing has become something much greater than a personal hobby. It has become a powerful way to teach life skills, build confidence, and open new horizons for underserved youth throughout Los Angeles County.
Angels Nest has proudly partnered with Matt and the LifeSail program for many years, giving foster youth the opportunity to experience sailing as part of their journey toward healing, growth, and independence. For many of the young people we support, these experiences are about much more than being out on the water. They are about trust, teamwork, courage, discipline, and discovering that they are capable of more than they may have imagined.
Arzo Yusuf was also interviewed in the segment to speak about the benefits this program has had on the youth Angels Nest supports. That perspective is one we have seen firsthand over the years. Programs like LifeSail give young people the chance to step into a new environment, learn practical skills, and experience moments of freedom, accomplishment, and connection. Those moments matter. They can leave a lasting impression and help shape how a young person sees themselves and their future.
What makes Matt so special is not only his love of sailing, but the heart he brings to sharing it with others. He understands that teaching youth how to sail can also teach them how to navigate challenges, work with others, and believe in their own potential. That kind of mentorship is powerful, and its impact reaches far beyond a single day on the water.
We are deeply thankful for Matt Schulz and for our longstanding partnership with LifeSail. We celebrate this well-deserved recognition and the many lives that have been touched through his dedication and service. Partners like Matt help remind us that real change happens when people use their passions to create opportunities for others.
We invite you to watch the CBS Sports Hero segment and learn more about Matt’s inspiring work through LifeSail.
